In marvelous photos of Deep etched old English town of Whitby and its environs in the late Victorian era and early 20th century.
Francis meadow Sutcliffe (Francis Meadow Sutcliffe) born on October 6, 1853 in the family of the artist in Headingley, Leeds. His father taught him photography, and in 1869, bought for son’s first camera. Frank has inherited a talent for drawing, but mother believed that all artists are crazy, so he decided to become a photographer.
In 1870 the family of Sutcliffe moved to Whitby, where the times spent summer vacation. Soon his father Francis died at the age of eighteen years he took care of the family.
Francis meadow Sutcliffe was shooting portraits of locals, street scenes, pier, fishers and the surrounding town. He died in Whitby in may 1941, leaving a wonderful archive of images, which are carefully depicted the life of the old town in the late XIX – early XX century.
